Swift

Its Latin name is Apus apus

The swift is not closely related to the swallow, it is more closely related to humming birds.

Swifts sleep and mate on the wing.

Swift eat insects and catch them on the wing.

The Swift is a true summer bird staying in Britain from May to August only.

Swifts fly in front of storms and weather systems to find food. These journeys can cover between 600 1200 miles at a time.

Swifts never land on the ground or perch on wires. They spend almost all their life on the wing.

Swifts scream.

Within 2 days of leaving the nest a young Swift can fly
hundreds of miles southwards on its first trip to central African for the winter.
