Sea Rocket
Scientific name: Cakile Maritima Grows on sandy beaches above the high tide line, but can tolerate being
buried by sand for short periods.
Fleshy and succulent leaves store water, which helps dilute the salt from the sea water.
One of the few species that colonise young sand dunes.
Have four leaved petals that can be white, pink or violet and flower from June to September.
Have special roots that allow them to thrive on the unstable sand dunes.
Provides food for migratory birds such as shore lark and lapwing.
Each plant spreads out from the centre and can cover and area of 50cm.
Seeds have a corky walled segment that help it float on water or blow with the wind.
A member of the cabbage and wallflower family.
Protected by the Wildlife & Countryside Act and cannot be uprooted without the landowners consent.
Fast growing plant with a short vegetation period helps it survive in unstable conditions.
