Meadowsweet

Its Latin name is Spiraea ulmaria.

Meadowsweet in a perennial herb which likes to grow in damp places.

The leaves are dark green with a whitish downy underside.

This plant is used in herbal medicine.

Meadowsweet has a delicate graceful creamy white flower.

The plant flowers from June till early September.

The flower has a very strong sweet smell.

In days gone by it was laid on floors o give rooms a sweet aroma. It was a favourite of Queen Elizabeth 1.

The flowers can be added to stew and jams to give a subtle almond flavour.

Other names for Meadowsweet are Queen of the Meadow, Pride of the Meadow, Meadow-Wort and Bridewort.
