Spring 2008

MAY

Wednesday 7th and Sunday 11th May
Trust member Mary Eastwood’s organic garden at 35 Heyes Lane, Timperley will be open to the public from 2.00 to 5.00 pm. Members may like to visit this well-known garden.

Saturday 10th May
A visit to the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, near Litchfield, Staffordshire. Coach leaves Bowling Green car park, Nantwich at 9am. Leave Arboretum at 3pm. Cost approx. £6.50 for coach. Booking essential.

Saturday 10th May
Early Birds! Early morning birdsong walk.
Beginners welcome or come and share your knowledge and experience. Charge £5 to include breakfast. Forest before breakfast, Eddisbury Hill and Old Pale afterwards. Binoculars desirable.
Meet by Barnsbridge Gates on Ashton Road, west of Hatchmere, 5.30 am

Sinderland Green Balsam clearing Gloves and Stout footwear are recommended.

Wednesday 14th May
A day outing to Mere Sands Wood, a Lancashire Wildlife Trust Reserve, SD 447157, five miles from Ormskirk. Following the talk in March we will visit the lakes, woodland, visitor centre, toilets and much more. Meet at 10.00 am in Ellesmere Road, Altrincham or at the Reserve at 11.00 am.

A Guided Tour round Compstall
Tour of the SSRI led by warden Tim Rogers. Meet at the weir Etherow Country Park 10.00. a.m

Saturday 17th May
Woolston Eyes
A well-known site for nesting Black-necked Grebe, this site also has a good variety of water birds and spring migrants.
Meet at 9.30 am by barrier in Thelwall Lane

Spring Plant Sale held jointly with Kelsall Gardening Club, at The Morris Dancer pub.

Garden Event for Members and Friends at Caldy; Bring and Buy, sale of Trust goods and plant stall.

Sunday 18th May
Wirral Coastal Walk
An opportunity for active members and Friends to support wildlife through sponsorship, and completing all or part of the walk.

Wednesday 28 May 5pm – 7pm
Evening birdsong walk in Delamere Forest. Meet at Delamere Community Centre on the B5152 (Station Rd) north of the Abbey Arms for coffee before driving to the forest. Charge £1. Details: Please book this event with Kay George on 01606 882183. Mid Cheshire Group.

Wednesday 28th May
Evening walk beside Sinderland Brook
through Stamford Brook “green” housing estate. Meet in De Quincey Road, Timperley, nearly opposite The Old Pelican at 7.00 pm. Walk of about 2 miles taking 1 to 2 hours.

JUNE

Saturday 7th June
Visit to Monks Hall farm, Hankelow Guided tour of dairy farm, on foot or by vehicle. Wellingtons recommended. Farm involved with environmental stewardship schemes. Species rich habitats including a length of the river Weaver. Bring a picnic lunch.
Meet at Bowling Green car park, Nantwich at 2.15pm.

Saturday 7th June
Dragonfly and damselfly hunt
led by Gillian Pierce. Meet at 11.00 am in the Marks and Spencer Car Park at Handforth Dean to walk 400 yards to an area of grassland and ponds.

Saturday 14th June
Meols Meadow Walk with Keith Hatton.
A chance for members and friends to visit this SSS1 site, which, normally is not open to the public. The main habitat is damp unimproved neutral grassland; several of the floral species are rare or restricted in Merseyside such as Dyer's Greenweed and Yellow rattle. The site has the Chimney Sweeper Moth, associated with the abundance of its larval food plant, pignut, and the locally rare Saltmarsh Money Spider . Keith works at the School of Biological Science, Liverpool University, is a recorder with Wirral Wildlife, and has a particular interest in the meadow. Meet at 2pm near level crossing in Carr Lane, between Meols and Moreton, SJ242901; car share if possible.

Sunday 15th June
Visit to the Gowy Meadows , A guided tour by Jackie Hulse. Travel by own transport. Meet in the layby next to the church at Thornton-le-Moors at 10am. (approximately two hours)

Wednesday 18th June
Sutton Manor, St. Helens
Good for wildflowers [inc. bee orchid, blue eyed grass etc] and water voles and selection of birds [inc range of nesting - Yellowhammer, Willow Warbler, Skylark and Reed Bunting.
Safe parking spot at the Smithy Manor pub on Jubits Lane, meet 7 pm (SJ517905)

Guided walk by the ranger on Lindow Common.
Meet 2pm in the L.C. car park, Racecourse Road off A538 Altrincham Road SJ 833814.

Wednesday 25th June
Evening visit to Pennington Flash, Leigh. Meet at 6.30 pm in Ellesmere Road, Altrincham or at 7.15 pm at the Flash car park. There are seats, picnic tables and bird hides near the pay and display car park for those who cannot walk far. (Also loos!)

JULY

Saturday 12th July
Bickley Hall Farm.
An opportunity for members and friends to visit the headquarters of Cheshire Wildlife Trust. This joint visit with the Cheshire North Group, will include a tour of the wildlife garden (approx. 1 hour), and a then a walk around the farm going all the way to Barmere, which is lovely in summer (up to 2 hours). This will be a car-sharing trip leaving the Wirral at about 1.30pm;meeting at Bickley at 2.15-2.30pm

Saturday 12th July
Afternoon visit to Bickley Hall Farm, jointly with Wirral Group. Meet at Ellesmere Road, Altrincham at 1.00 pm or at BHF at 2.15 to 2.30 pm. See the garden, then sit in it or walk to Bar Mere and round it, taking one to three hours in all. A cuppa and loos available!

Sunday 13th July 10.30am – 3.30pm
Through Dales and Woods Join members of Wirral Wildlife and Wirral Rangers for this circular walk through some of Wirral's finest countryside, taking in farmland, woodland, heaths and the Dee estuary. Strong footwear and a packed lunch advised. Start and finish at Cleaver Heath Nature Reserve, Oldfield Road, Heswall,

Wednesday 16th July 7pm
Rixton Clay Pits Once a clay extraction site, Rixton Claypits is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Local Nature Reserve. The Claypits include a diverse range of habitats and is a wildlife haven where both the keen naturalist and casual visitor will find things of interest. Easy to follow paths will take you to ponds, wildflower meadows, quiet corners and woodland. From Warrington : Follow Manchester Road (A57) out of Woolston, across both M6 roundabouts for approximately mile. Continue past the Transport café. About 400 yards on the left is the turning for the Visitor Centre, 120 yards further along on the left is the car park.

Thurs 17th July 6pm
Visit to Dutton Park Farm This visit to the Trust’s newest reserve will be led by Jacki Hulse and will give us the opportunity to get to know this important site.
Meet at Peter Young’s house, The Beeches, Cliff Road, Acton Bridge, CW8 3QP and walk down to Dutton Locks to cross the river. We hope to offer a glass of wine/coffee on return from the visit.

Fun Days, Ness Gardens, Wirral We will again be running the Frog Dip and the Butterfly Park stall on these days - helpers who can cope with lots of interested children always needed!
