Manchester United Plc
The site of Manchester United’s training centre at Carrington is situated on remnant mossland, drained in Victorian times to provide farmland close to the expanding city of Manchester. The Trust manages a nature reserve within the site at Carrington which includes a peat scrape heathland and scrub providing habitat for a number of species including Red Admiral butterfly, Meadow Pipit and Grey Partridge.
Manchester United takes its corporate social and environmental responsibilities very seriously, and the support it provides to Cheshire Wildlife Trust sits very comfortably with a wide range of other measures that the club has initiated, such as recycling of cardboard boxes, glass bottles and water. All these actions successfully demonstrate to the club’s shareholders a responsible management attitude towards the environment.
Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station
Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station has four lagoons which cover an area of 120 hectares (300 acres). All four lagoons provide a variety of habitats for wildlife, and all the wild species that are attracted to the site are actively conserved. The site had 126 bird species sighted in 2003, with a good range of butterflies, dragonflies, mammals, amphibians and an excellent range of flora. The Station also has a bird hide, educational resource centre and nature trail, to enable the general public to visit the lagoons to see wildlife close-up for themselves.
Cheshire Wildlife Trust has helped Fiddler’s Ferry to deliver education programmes to the local community, with the station consequently enjoying a better image and improved relationships locally.
Barclays Bank
Barclays Bank takes a very practical view of its corporate social responsibility by encouraging its staff to undertake voluntary work and allowing them up to two days per year during work time to do so. Teams of Barclays volunteers have been working on several CWT nature reserves, under the guidance of the Reserves Officers, undertaking essential reserves management tasks such as scrub clearance and fence building.
But the benefits are not just one way, as the staff find the day provides them with a really enjoyable and satisfying team-building experience. One volunteer commented: “I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I think it was the team spirit that made the day more enjoyable”.
